Given the idea of the perfect life, the world spontaneously sheds light on how we should live our lives. It is often held in a perspective that is quite far from what the Bible holds as upright. As I'm in the last month of holding on to the word "teen" whenever I mention my age, I can only look back and thank God for being pretty hands-on in what I considered the most critical stage of my life.
Teenagers nowadays are quite into the world and can easily grasp its teachings whether they be right or wrong. As I read tweets, posts and see pictures on social media, one thing seems to be very indubitable. And that is how teenagers live their lives, and how they often misconceive all the lures and deception of this world as the truth that they stand for. Though there are quite a lot of disturbing posts online, it cannot however be denied that there are still some dedicated youth out there trying to reach out, to stand up for their faith in God, to seek the lost and to preach the gospel to its highest peak – no matter what the cost.
Few weeks ago, as I was scrolling through my Instagram, I came across a Christ-founded band that consists of four siblings touring around the US –gladly making Christ known to everyone they meet. Their lives truly are an epitome of what God's children must be doing and able to do. With over 17 thousand and growing followers on Instagram, we can see that they truly are so inspiring in so many ways that their passion and commitment really reflects Jesus' light in them — through the regular words of encouragement that they post. So what did I have to do? I didn't let a minute pass and sent them an e-mail regarding this interview. Thankfully, they were on the go too!
So here it is, Interview Sessions 01 with YoungHeart!
Hailing from Miami, YoungHeart is a driven and passionate band with a unique approach to their blend of Christian Pop and rock. Their music is all about celebrating the love and glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: YoungHeart’s lyrics are full of meaning, energy and pathos, directly connecting with the listeners through uplifting melodies, thought-provoking lyrics and lots of charisma. Their vision is to inspire a generation to let go of all that they think they are, for all that Christ is making them to be and their purpose is to sing of Christ's love to strengthen in His truth.
Carina is one of the lead vocalists, plays acoustic guitar and composes songs. Her spiritual gift is faith and her passion is purity. She stands on the hope of God’s promises and models her desire to live a righteous life by seeking to take all thoughts captive to Christ.
Carlos is one of the lead vocalists, plays the electric guitar/keyboard and composes as well. His spiritual gift is exhortation and his passion is power in Christ. He is an example to others of standing strong against temptation and living out God's given strength in Him.
Michael sings backup vocals/harmonies and plays the bass. His spiritual gift is teaching and his passion is perseverance. He understands the value of seeking out truth and staying focused while enduring the race set before him.
Gabriela plays the drums and cajon. Her spiritual gift is mercy and her passion is perspective. She has a heart for those who are weak and shows compassion to all God's people seeing them with eyes of love.
Me: What word best describes each of you (Carina, Carlos, Michael, and Gabriela) and what Bible verses would you recommend to those who are constantly seeking Jesus aside from your theme verse 1 Timothy 4:12?
YH: Carina: artsy/Hebrews 10:39 - “But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved."
Carlos: funny/Proverbs 3:5-6 - “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Michael: scholarly/Isaiah 40:31 - “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
Gaby: joyful/Matthew 6:33 - “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you."
Me: What word best describes your relationship as siblings?
Me: As siblings, what inspired you to form YoungHeart?
YH: We didn't have a worship band at the church my dad used to pastor, so he encouraged us to come together to be the worship team. We did that for three years before taking a step of faith and releasing our first EP and taking a national tour to share the message of Christ.
Me: What were the most challenging factors that you faced / are facing and how did God help you deal with it?
YH: In regards to the tour, the biggest challenges in the beginning were selling our home & leaving all our friends & family behind. That's still a challenge for us but we realize God's plan. The hardest part now would be RV living. We went two months with practically no air conditioning so as you can imagine, it got very hot. Space is also tight with seven people but it helps us to recognize the sacrifice.
Me: Seeing teenagers out there who are completely on the other side of life, How would you lead them to Christ?
YH: One of the best ways of leading someone to Christ besides telling them about Christ and the salvation found in Him is to be a living example of how Jesus expects us to live our life. We are called to be set apart and when we live it out, others will notice that something is different. Now our words match our actions and we can love like Jesus did.
Me: What are your best experiences as a worship band so far?
YH: We love the feedback we get about how we've inspired this generation to take a stand for their faith. It's really encouraging to see how many lives we're reaching globally. For example, we've received a lot of messages about people who have been going through really tough times and through listening to this message, they are standing strong through whatever they may be going through. We also get a lot of prayer requests from our followers, which we find to be a real privilege to pray for God's children.
Me: Your song "Mountains" in particular is my favorite and I know that many loves it too. How did you come up with such beautiful and uplifting lyrics?
YH: Mountains is written based from Proverbs 3:5-6. It was written as a reminder for others (and ourselves) to continue to trust in the Lord because He has a plan for us, even when we don't know. So I [Carlos] didn't really come up with the lyrics, but God gave them to me through the reading of scripture. We are going to be putting out a "Behind the Music" for Mountains soon which may give you a better idea of why the song was written!
Me: Assuming that you may all be students, how do you manage your time between studies and touring?
YH: I [Carina] graduated from high school this year, so I'm taking a break from school for this semester & God willing, will be starting college in January. Everyone else is home-schooled and works academically between projects.
Me: As teenagers, seeing all the influence out there, how do you stay focused on Jesus?
YH: We recognize our purpose in life & realize that without Jesus, we are nothing. So we try to eliminate any other distractions that may get in the way of our relationship with Jesus by keeping everything captive to Christ. For example, don't watch all the movies or listen to all the music everyone else in the world does, to make sure we're keeping ourselves holy in God's eyes. It helps that we all have accountability with each other & our parents. Sometimes there may be "wolves in sheep's clothing" so we always have to be aware of those circumstances & seek Jesus in everything. Daily personal worship time, prayer, and Bible reading are super important to us because it keeps us connected to the source, which is Jesus.
Me: For all the teenagers who are aspiring worship leaders, musicians or instrumentalists, what advice can you give them?
YH: Keep practicing what God's gifted you in & continue to use those talents for His glory. God says that He's not looking for worship leaders, he's looking for worshippers so be worshippers first. All God's gifts were given to us for a purpose, which is to know God and make Him known. Also, practice really hard as an act of stewardship and trustworthiness of the gifts given from God. We've seen that many people want to do this for wrong reasons, because it looks cool, however, it shouldn't be done for our glory but God's.
Me: For all the young people who are on the same journey as yours, what encouragement could you give to them?
YH: Keep your eyes on Jesus alone, the world has nothing good to offer & God will open whatever doors necessary. Don't get discouraged when some things don't work out, God's plans are bigger than yours. Also, use discretion. The Bible says not to throw pearls to pigs, meaning some people will not accept what you are saying so don't push it, just move on. There are others who are open to hear & who may need to hear it more. Trust God's leading and remember, you are not responsible for the result, just to faithfully plant a seed. Keep your eyes open always because God will make appointments for the gospel in the most unexpected places. For example, we've had opportunities to minister in laundromats.
Me: Lastly, what can you say to all those supporting you and those who haven't heard about YoungHeart yet? What can they expect from you?
YH: Thank you for all the support you've given us! We're just normal kids & we believe that you guys can reach hearts for Jesus too, whether it's around the world or in your own town. We will continue to go through whatever doors God opens & for now you guys can be expecting more music, teachings, & encouragements on our social medias. God bless!
There you go! I hope you all get the message of hope, love and servanthood that YoungHeart hopes to impart to each and everyone of us especially to the young people out there.
Special thanks to Carina, Carlos, Michael and Gaby for making this interview possible.

I am a YoungHeart for Christ, are you too?
I live an ordinary life; striving and making it work in the giant sandpit aka Dubai. My life isn't perfect (I wish it was!) But I guess there's something about the imperfection in my journey that makes it worth the write and share. I believe that we don't have to have everything figured out because if we do, a lifetime won't be enough...
